Miss Lavelle White
BB King helped launch her career when he took her on the road with him. Since then, she's played with James Brown, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, countless greats. Miss Lavelle is an inductee in the Texas Music Hall of Fame.
A consummate entertainer, she inspires her audience as she swirls them up in funk, blues and soul rhythms. Her band includes some of Austin's finest musicians including Kaz Kazanoff, Appa Perry, Matt Farrell, George Rarey and Paul Buddha Mills.

Tommie Lee Bradley
She’s taken her critically acclaimed music to Japan, with Soul Shock, to Canada, with Jean-Pierre Ferland and Ginnette Reno, and throughout the United States, both as a headliner and with acts such as Jim Messina. She’s a stellar songwriter with tightly crafted, highly visual lyrics. Her vocals are those of a soul drenched Southern song stylist, able to make any song her own, no matter who composed the material.

Rebecca Laird
In addition to winning multiple awards as a blues guitarist, Rebecca has delved into jazz, fusion jazz, folk/roots music and even 17th century Scottish lute music. She plays with authority and confidence, coming from years of performances, study and her own natural talent.
When you hear Rebecca play, you will notice a fresh, stunning virtuosity. You will think you know where she is going in a song, but she will surprise you and take you into her expressive world. Your mind will know it has experienced a deep, educated breath of musical talent. Your heart will know it has been awakened!
Rebecca is a multiple recipient of the Jimmy T-99 Nelson Scholarship from the Houston Blues Society.

Cheyenne Ayla James
Cheyenne Ayla James is a local, up and coming blues singer-actress in the Houston area. She is currently working on a production of “It Ain't Nothin But The Blues” at the Queensbury Theatre, scheduled to open the end of March. Cheyenne also has an original, down home blues album set to record with the very best musicians at Red Shack Recording.
Having opened for Miss Lavelle White a few years ago, Cheyenne is thrilled and honored to share the stage with her again; but most importantly be a part of the celebration of “Blues Women, Blues History, 2017” to help perpetuate the legacy of the Blues and future of the Houston Blues Museum.

Sept.30 - Oct. 2, HBM will participate in the Houston History Alliance's 6th annual conference on local history. This year's theme is "The History of Houston's Musical Soul," so HBM seemed a perfect fit to help plan and present the weekend's events, which will be based in the new MATCH Theaters at 3400 Main Street. The conference has exploded into a three-day event, with the centerpiece being the conference on Saturday, October 1.
It will feature a keynote by Joe Nick Patoski and a number of panels exploring the city’s impact on many musical genres.

This event will include a screening of the 20-minute documentary “Texas Zydeco” with all attendees receiving a DVD copy of the film, 2) Saturday lunch will feature an acoustic washboard and stand-up base duo will entertainment and Saturday evening at The Continental Club, enjoy a free performance by Trudy Lynn, followed by a ticketed headliner. - We have several events planned that need someone to tell people about the museum and the Houston Legends who created the traditions we work to keep alive. Come serve as a representative of the Museum and help people learn about our collection and the wealth of history it contains.
- Don’t like to speak to strangers? Too busy to attend events? Don’t worry. We also need help cataloging artifacts for the virtual collection we hope to have online within a few months. Any number of hours would help. The software is easy to learn, and you can help us enormously in this area.
- Have writing talent? We would love to have your help on press releases and descriptions of our artifacts as we prepare the information for our new virtual collection going online in a few months.
- Like to host parties? Think about a house concert fund-raiser for HBM.
- Good at something we didn't think of? Give us a call!
Houston Symphony's "Day of Music" - July 9, 2016
HSO’s celebration of Houston Music on Saturday July 9 was a free event open to everyone who wanted to sample the great variety of music available in Houston. The event was also HSO's opening of the fall performance season.
For the fourth year, HBM was a sponsor. We invited attendees to participate in three ways:
First, to stop by the Museum’s booth to see an exhibit of artifacts acquired this year, including a guitar signed by Joe “Guitar” Hughes and an original contract between Big Walter Price and Duke Peacock Records.
Second, to learn to play the harmonica! HBM sponsored two free harmonica clinics at 3:15 PM and 6:15 PM on the Balcony Level, Capitol Avenue side. With the help of musician Terry Rogers, anyone there learned how to blow the Blues. Didn’t have a harmonica? No problem! HBM had them for sale at the door.
Finally, to attend the Museum’s highlight of the day -- a performance by Houston’s Legendary Vocalist Carolyn Blanchard and a special guest performance by Milton Hopkins. The free concert was at 2:00 PM in the Rear Lobby of Jones Hall.
This young man stole the show at the Harmonica Clinic!
